How to Search Criminal Dockets
One documented starting point for a Culberson County docket search is iDocket. Its free Search by Name tool lets you pick Texas and choose Culberson. Then type all or part of a last and first name. Run the search twice. Choose Culberson County and Culberson District separately. A county misdemeanor and a district felony sit under different jurisdiction choices. That holds even though Tina Urias runs the combined County and District Clerk office. Before searching, gather the legal name, an approximate filing date, and the likely court. A citation may point to a JP precinct or Van Horn Municipal Court. Call that court directly. The vendor notes that Display Case and Advanced Search may require a subscription. Skip guessing a case-number pattern; no official Culberson format is published.
- Choose Texas and Culberson in the free name search.
- Run separate County and District searches.
- Try a partial first name when spelling is uncertain.
- Compare the court, type, and dates in Case History.
- Ask the custodian to verify the record or quote a certified-copy fee.
Culberson County Criminal Docket Routes
No single database holds every Culberson County criminal docket. iDocket serves as the county and district case-management route, per the Texas Office of Court Administration. When a display looks incomplete or you need a certified record, the combined clerk can help. Requests may be mailed to P.O. Box 158, Van Horn, TX 79855, and the clerk lists 432-283-2058. The lower courts keep their own materials. Each Culberson County JP holds fine-only criminal and citation records. Van Horn Municipal Court handles city ordinance and fine-only Class C matters. Appeals go through the Texas appellate system. Federal criminal cases belong to the Western District of Texas and PACER. Each of these is a separate record set. None is a different view of one local database.
What a Criminal Docket Shows
iDocket labels its event display "Case History." Vendor help says an All tab may group documents, actions, financial transactions, and clerk notices, with added groups for motions, orders, answers or citations, and other actions. A public view can leave out an image, a restricted entry, or a newly processed item. Treat what you see as a chronology. Verify key events with the court.
| Case number | The filing court's identifier; the public Culberson format was not confirmed. |
|---|---|
| Court and category | Distinguishes district felony, county misdemeanor, and other court types. |
| Actions | May record filings, appearances, notices, motions, and orders. |
| Settings | May show hearing dates, subject to direct court confirmation. |
| Disposition | May give dismissal, plea, judgment, sentence, or another closing event. |
Culberson County Criminal Docket Totals
A September 3, 2026 iDocket display listed 572 District criminal cases. County criminal cases came to 2,282. Treat those as vendor inventory totals. They are not annual filings, active prosecutions, convictions, warrants, or counts of distinct people. A database snapshot measures something different from a state fiscal-year activity report.
For official trends, use the Texas Court Activity Database. It defines added, disposed, inactive, reactivated, and active pending as administrative categories. A docket search concerns one case; the state database reports aggregate workload.
Stages on a Criminal Docket
Depending on the offense and the court, a Culberson County criminal docket may open with a complaint, information, or indictment. An appearance and a plea can come next. Settings, motions, and orders fill the middle stretch. A plea or trial and a disposition come later. After that, expect a judgment, sentence, payment, probation event, or other post-disposition record. Not every case takes every step.
Docket flow: Charge Filed › Appearance › Pretrial Settings › Plea or Trial › Disposition › Post-Disposition Record
A reset just moves a setting. It does not dismiss the charge. Likewise, an iDocket "latest new case filed" date is a new-case metric, not the latest hearing or document in an existing Culberson County criminal docket.
Culberson County Criminal Docket Jurisdiction
Court level controls routing. Felonies go to the district courts, and the District Clerk maintains those Culberson files. The constitutional county court handles county-level misdemeanors, with the County Clerk side of the combined office keeping the records. Justice courts and Van Horn Municipal Court each keep their own fine-only Class C and ordinance matters.
| Matter | Court | Route |
|---|---|---|
| Felony | District Court | iDocket District, then District Clerk |
| County misdemeanor | County Court | iDocket County, then County Clerk |
| Fine-only citation | JP Precinct 1–4 | The named precinct |
| City Class C case | Van Horn Municipal Court | Municipal clerk |
Which Court Holds Criminal Dockets
Culberson County is served by the 205th and 394th District Courts. The file stays with the local District Clerk, but judicial administration may run through the 205th office in El Paso or the 394th coordinator in Alpine. So a question about a setting and a request for a copy can land at two different offices. The county's four JPs are separate record keepers. The official county Justice page lists Pct. 1 at 432-283-2609, Pct. 2 at 432-283-5008, Pct. 3 at 432-283-1101, and Pct. 4 at 432-283-1081. Van Horn Municipal Court lists 432-283-2050. The official 205th District Court page illustrates that regional structure.

Culberson County Criminal Docket Troubleshooting
A blank result does not prove a record is absent. Try the legal last name with a first initial. Strip out punctuation, and search County and District separately. The case may sit in a JP or municipal court, fall outside the displayed history, or be restricted, and recently accepted work can take time to appear.
If a case does not appear: call the court named on the paperwork, state the court level and case type, and ask the custodian to confirm the number and setting.
re:SearchTX is the wrong fallback for a missing criminal result. A Texas Judicial Council report says its collection excludes criminal cases. For Culberson County, the useful channels remain iDocket, the clerk, and the responsible lower court.
Culberson County JP Criminal Workload
Culberson County's justice courts handled a big administrative load in FY2025. The official report shows 16,427 JP criminal matters pending at the start, 801 reactivated, 2,274 added, and 2,156 disposed. Another 323 went inactive, leaving 17,005 active pending at year end. These figures count case categories. They are not headcounts of residents. Precinct 1 held 15,204 of that ending inventory, far ahead of the rest. Precincts 2, 3, and 4 reported 114, 675, and 1,012 respectively. Why one precinct carries so much? Old inventory, nonresidents, multiple citations, and traffic work all may explain the scale. The report proves no single cause. For a particular docket, search the precinct by name.
Public Access and Sealed Criminal Dockets
Court records in Texas follow their own rules. Under Government Code §552.0035, judiciary records answer to court rules and other law rather than the standard Public Information Act. That act is no shortcut into a case file. Rule 12 governs judicial administrative records, while a criminal docket file itself may sit in any of four states: public, sealed, restricted, or confidential under separate authority.
Access boundaries:
Texas Family Code Chapter 58 sets special rules for juvenile records.
The 2025 Culberson DFPS order restricts child-protection records and gives a formal request route.
Code of Criminal Procedure Chapter 45A can make certain fine-only records confidential after the statutory fifth anniversary, subject to exceptions.
Rule 21c also shields sensitive identifiers in filings. Leave full Social Security numbers, license numbers, birth dates, financial account details, minors' names, and home addresses out of any broad records request. What belongs in the request instead? Name the court, the case number if known, the item sought, the date range, the copy type, and your contact details.
Culberson County Criminal Docket Copies
Start with the custodian when you want a plain or certified Culberson County criminal docket copy. Make the request specific. It should identify the court, the case type, and the number or style if known. It should also name the document or event, the date range, and the delivery method. Say whether you need certification. Requests must be specific enough to pin down the record.
Culberson posts a recording-fee schedule. The clerk has not confirmed those charges for criminal court files, so ask for a current quote. iDocket adds its own limits. It can restrict images or charge subscribers. Its help desk does not promise that every Culberson filing image is public.
Culberson County Criminal Docket Appeals
An appeal opens a second docket, and the trial record stays put. Texas appellate cases run through TAMES. It lets you filter by case number, style, trial case number, county, trial court, filing date, criminal classification, and status. The system refreshes nightly. Even so, the trial clerk remains the source for the Culberson file itself.
Federal criminal matters work differently. They live in PACER or CM/ECF. Culberson sits in the Pecos Division of the Western District of Texas. CourtListener or RECAP sometimes holds a free contributed copy, but coverage is spotty. Keep those federal results separate from the state Culberson County criminal docket.
Culberson County Criminal Docket Verification
Each source answers a different question. Ask the court coordinator or the court about a live setting. Ask the clerk about the filed history. Get a certified copy when you need an official reproduction. Schedules can shift on short notice, too. A 2020 Culberson notice changed hours, canceled dockets, and moved 394th hearings to a virtual format. That shows why an old setting should never control a present appearance.
Write down the portal terms, the court selection, and the date of access. Then hold the public history against the latest order or notice from the custodian. A vendor snapshot can mislead. That habit keeps a vendor snapshot, a regional office listing, or a stale setting from being mistaken for the current Culberson County criminal docket.
